In life, we rarely switch off. There is always something going on. Whether it’s work related, things to do at home or a mobile phone buzzing away.
Sometimes, I’ll pop out for lunch which involves a short drive to a supermarket. I found myself getting out of my car and immediately checking my emails on my phone. Literally, I would have checked the emails about 5 minutes ago in the office. I’m not sure why I did this, perhaps I didn’t want to miss anything, maybe it was a sort of fidgeting mechanism that kicked in but ultimately my eyes were focussed on a screen. Any emails can surely wait 30 mins whilst I take a break to let my mind relax? Now, I look around, I breath, I see colour, I experience the moment.
Whilst technology has advanced to make life easier, really it has just made us busier. That’s not necessarily a bad thing but certainly we are so distracted by work and social media that we rarely take time to breath. It’s amazing how much we take breathing for granted!
Meditation and mindfulness simply helps you to stop thinking and it is so ridiculously refreshing. If you’ve never done it, try it! You simply need to give up 10 minutes of your day, there is nothing to lose. The mind is a ridiculously busy place, taking some time to breath will help your wondering thoughts go away and help you focus on the present rather than the endless scenarios that run through the mind.
Since I started meditating, I am really beginning to feel the benefits of mindfullness, learning more each time. Thinking, watching, reading, doing, checking; everything stops and I make time to live in the moment. It helps me both personally and professionally.
